7 things to do on an island vacation

I recently came across a couple of friends, who have the opportunity to take a vacation to the Maldives, but are giving it second thoughts because they are unsure of what all they can do on an island location. In fact, one of my friends was of the opinion that she might get bored over there!!

Having had that conversation, I knew I had to pen this down for all those like-minded people having confused opinions on whether splurging a good amount of money on an island is worth your vacation.

Hell yes, it is!

Be it the Maldives, Santorini, Krabi, Seychelles or any other exotic island, a vacation to get away from the stress of our routine lives is a must! And nothing acts as a better monotony breaker than an island vacation.

Depending on the size of the island that you’re visiting, here is a list of 7 things you can do to make the most of your holiday:

  1. Relax, Refresh & Rejuvenate

I cannot stress the importance of this one enough!

Why bother managing your time trying to visit all the monuments, temples and museums in a city, when you can spend an entire day in a dreamy hammock on a pristine idyllic island? I’m not saying that touring cities is a bad idea, but don’t most of us stay in cities as well? Can there be anything more euphoric than lying down on the beach for hours at end, spending quality time with your loved ones or just some precious me-time?

Treat yourself to a rejuvenating spa treatment, read a book while sunbathing, listen to the waves crashing on the shore, collect precious shells, build sand castles….get the point? In a nutshell, just whisk away all your worries and stresses. When otherwise do we get to treat ourselves this way? If I could, I would spend my entire life doing just this. Hmm. (Okay, I’m dreaming already.)

  1. Click click!

Want to come back with a photo album straight out of the travel magazines? The kinds that would make your girlfriends go green with envy? Well, then just pull out your cameras and soak in the beauty before you! With the infinite ocean, pillow-like clouds and soft clean sands as your backdrop, you’re sure to come back with postcard-perfect shots! Want to delve deeper? Hone up your photography skills! After all, you’re the scientist and the world is your laboratory =)

  1. Nom nom local food!

No matter how small or big your island destination is, you’re sure to find yummilicious local food out there. Go on, experiment and tantalize your taste buds with something new.

Never had fish? Or squids? Lobsters? Prawns? Your island is the perfect place for that experiment! Known for their sea food, most islands will serve you the fresh catch of the day.

Make it a point to ask for authentic local dishes with locally sourced ingredients.

If you’re an epicure like Pushki, make conversation with your chef and come back with a refreshed palate!

  1. Hello Water!

The list is endless for all you adventure junkies out there.  Say hello to the world of water! Snorkel around and appreciate the coral in the area,  get mesmerized with the schools of colorful fish that cross your path, jot down the aquatic species you saw in a tiny diary, then educate yourself. If nothing else, go on your mission of finding nemo!

Had enough of snorkeling and want to dig in deeper? Go scuba diving!! Trust us, it’s a whole new world down there =)

Paranoid of going inside the water? How about kayaking (it is a good workout for your arms too =P) ? Or trying your luck on a jet ski? Kite surfing, anyone?

If the thought of the expansive ocean sends shivers down your spine, don’t you worry. Just order a snack, sip up on some cocktail and hang around in the resort’s swimming pool. Life just does not get better than this!

  1. Shop it!

If your island is relatively big and has more than one resort or hotel, it is bound to have a local market as well. Find your way down there, or rent a bike and get under the skin of the city. Bring back local handicrafts or buy souvenirs to please those not-so-lucky-like-you friends! If you find pleasure in meeting people, it’s always lovely to chat with the locals and listen to fascinating stories unheard of in your locality. This is when you will get the real feel of the place!

  1. Activity time!

Most island accommodations offer a heap of activities to their guests as freebies or at an additional cost. It is wise to indulge in a selected few always. Sunset tours and sandbank excursions are commonplace in most islands and needless to say, offer jaw dropping views.

Our most memorable island activity was stingray feeding sessions in the Maldives! I never got enough of those majestic graceful creatures. Our resort also offered table tennis, cocktail mixing classes and origami sessions which kept us well occupied for the entire duration of our stay. So find out what’s on offer for you and make your pick!

  1. Come home with a value addition

You know, the best memory of a holiday is to come back with something new. Be it a new skill or a new tattoo, it’s a great way of giving your holiday a permanent place in your heart! Go on and enroll yourself for a scuba diving license, learn a new language, indulge in fun facts about the species found in that area or take some cooking classes! A wise man never stops learning, my friends!!

Phew. So we’re done with this super 7! If I still haven’t given you enough reasons to get up and book that vacay right away, I don’t know what will!
